Man Drunkenly Crashed Pickup Into Tree, Injuring Two People In Toms River: Prosecutors

An Ocean County man was accused of driving drunk in a crash that injured two people, authorities said.

Erick Perez-Ramirez, 40, of Jackson Township, was arrested after the crash on Saturday, Apr. 20, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. Perez-Ramirez was charged with two counts of assault by auto.

Toms River police responded to the crash near the intersection of Bay Avenue and Ethan Court at around 4:45 a.m. Perez-Ramirez drove a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with three passengers from Toms River.

Investigators said Perez-Ramirez failed to make a right turn while driving east on Bay Avenue. The pickup went off the road and crashed into a tree.

Two 33-year-old women were brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and were listed in stable condition. One woman was in the front passenger seat and the other was in the back seat.

A 31-year-old man also in the back seat and Perez-Ramirez were not injured and stayed at the scene. Officers arrived at the scene and saw that Perez-Ramirez appeared to be intoxicated.

Perez-Ramirez failed field sobriety tests and he was taken into custody, charged with driving under the influence. He was brought to Community Medical Center in Toms River for a court-approved blood sample to be taken and the results were still pending.

Perez-Ramirez was held at the Ocean County Jail to await a detention hearing.
